Joe Garner, former Chief Executive Officer, Nationwide Building Society
Joe has been a CEO of large scale businesses for over 10 years – most recently as Nationwide Building Society’s Chief Executive Officer from 2016 until June 2022.
As a building society, Nationwide was founded for a social purpose and is one of the UK's largest mutual organisations with 16 million members, 17 thousand employees and recently announced record profits of over £1.5bn.
Joe’s career started with Procter & Gamble and Dixons Carphone. He joined HSBC in 2004, latterly appointed as leader of HSBC’s Retail and Commercial Bank in the UK. In 2014 he became Chief Executive Officer of Openreach.
Joe served as a non-executive director of the Financial Ombudsman Service from 2008-2010 and as Chair of the British Triathlon charity from 2013 to 2021.
Joe is passionate about the value of exercise in wellbeing, is a Patron of British Triathlon and a GB age group competitor. He is married with one son.
