Case Study with Jessica Higson

Director of Nursing, Royal Berkshire Hospital, May 2022 Florence Nightingale Foundation Programme

In 2022, I had the privilege of participating in a bespoke Windsor Leadership Programme designed specifically for the Florence Nightingale Foundation. Held in two parts, this experience took me on a transformative journey, shaping my approach to leadership in ways I hadn't anticipated.

Enhancing leadership through reflection

Reflecting on my experience, I discovered that the programme's emphasis on reflection was one of its most profound benefits. The opportunity to step away from the relentless work environment and engage with peers facing similar challenges was invaluable. The reflective space allowed me to examine my leadership style and consider the impact of my actions on others much more deeply. It was a rare chance to pause and look inward, something I hadn't done enough in the past.

The power of peer support and honest feedback

The programme's structure, which included feedback from small peer groups, proved incredibly beneficial. Receiving feedback from peers who didn't initially know me, but came to understand my leadership challenges, provided fresh insights and helped me refine my approach. Their perspectives were enlightening, helping me see blind spots and encouraging me to grow. The speakers, who openly shared their experiences, enriched our discussions. Their sincerity and openness in discussing leadership failures and learnings added valuable depth to our learning experience. It was heartening to see such vulnerability and honesty from accomplished leaders, which inspired me to be more open and authentic in my own leadership journey.

Implementing insightful leadership

The Windsor Leadership Programme sparked profound transformations in my leadership approach. One significant change involved my approach to a project proposal. Initially hesitant about the project that had been brought to me by a colleague, I discussed the issue with my peers during the programme. Their reflective discussions and feedback encouraged me to reconsider my perspective. Inspired by their insights, I decided to take the lead on the initiative and the result was the successful implementation of 'Clinical Fridays' for senior nurses. This initiative has since become an integral part of our routine, standing as a testament to my evolved leadership approach and the practical impact of the programme.

Another significant change involved incorporating reflective practices within my teams. Recognising the value of reflection and peer support, I implemented similar practices with my staff, facilitating open discussions focused on critical issues such as stress and burnout. These sessions have become a safe space for my team to openly discuss challenges and share strategies for managing burnout, fostering camaraderie and support among team members.

Reflecting on the programme’s value

The programme held immense value, offering more than just professional development. It provided a unique opportunity to build a network of peers with whom I have maintained close connections. It brought us together in a unique way, allowing us to engage in discussions on challenging topics and share our vulnerabilities. This shared experience fostered a deep sense of trust among us, enabling us to open up and support one another in profoundly meaningful ways.

Even today, we remain connected, a testament to the strong bonds forged during the programme. And the support network has become even more vital, as we have navigated the complexities of our leadership journeys post-programme.
